Pegasus Art Farm and Art Bistro
..............................................................................................................................................
Mysore, the city of Palaces, has a positional advantage that few other cities can boast of. It’s proximity to Bangalore and also to Coorg, Ooty, Wayanad, Nagarhole, Bandipur and a host of other places make it an ideal destination to take a break while heading to any of these places from Bangalore.
An ideal place to take such a break is the Pegasus Art Farm located off the Mysore-Srirangapatna road, marked by an indiscernible board on the main road that directs you to the Farm. It was set up primarily as a serene abode where artists could take a sabbatical and create wonders on canvas with newfound inspiration. The Farm is run by a charming German lady Mrs. Sigrid Benthin, whose Danish husband Mr. John Benthin was an artist himself.
As you drive down the gravel path leading to the Farm, a quaint cottage straight out of the 19th century welcomes you. The gates open to a lush green garden with some pretty flowering plants. There is a sense of subdued sophistication to the place. Mr. Benthin’s works are on display in the studio on the Farm. Apart from the studio, there are two rooms available for a stay on the Farm. And each room is provided with all the necessary materials that an artist may need to create magic.
Often one hears mellifluous notes of maestros like Mozart, Bach or Beethoven waft through the air from the studio. Couple this with an inviting sit-out replete with a variety of books from Fairy Tales to History along with board games and you have the setting for a perfect afternoon. There is a gazebo a few metres away, which is surrounded by Singapore Cherry trees and abounds in shade and charm. It is a joy to just sit there or entertain some friends.
The Art Bistro is the luncheonette of the Pegasus Art Farm. Indulge yourself in the European wonders that are served here with the speciality being German food. Mrs. Benthin personally watches over the preparation of all the delicacies to ensure a culinary experience you will never forget. Excellent varieties of chicken, mutton, pork and beef are served here and will leave your taste buds amazed. The beef that was served to us had been marinated in red wine and cooked in original German spices that Mrs. Benthin uses for all her cooking. The vegetarians have limited but delicious choices like Onion Quiche and Eggplant Feta etc. But take heart, you are adequately compensated by a sinful range of desserts. Don’t miss the Apple Cake with Ice Cream!
The Farm is an ideal place for families to spend some time together with a sandbox and cuddly rabbits to keep the kids busy, a jogging track and three adorable dogs.
Also, the Farm is perfectly located to be a base camp from where you can visit places like Mysore, Coorg, Ooty, Wayanad and the likes. Mrs. Benthin’s hospitality and cuisine will make all European visitors feel at home away from home on the Farm and it is an ideal place for them to explore South India from.
So the next time you are on your way out Bangalore, slow down a bit and stop at the Pegasus Art Farm, say hello to Mrs. Benthin and relish the Pegasus Art Farm experience. You will long to go back there.
NB:
- The menu at the Art Bistro changes every fortnight.
- Do keep in mind that the portions served at the Art Bistro, though exceptionally delicious, tend to be slightly large for the average Indian palate and you might want to watch how much you order.
